Overview

Reimagining a book cover based off of ten key words. I decided to use the book Crying in H-Mart by Michelle Zauner

Premise

“Crying in H-Mart” is a memoir written by Michelle Zauner that beautifully explores themes of grief, identity, and cultural heritage. The book chronicles Zauner’s journey of self-discovery following the loss of her mother to cancer. As a Korean-American musician, Zauner reflects on her complex relationship with her mother, their shared love for food, and the cultural connection they found in the aisles of H-Mart, a Korean grocery store. Through poignant storytelling and lyrical prose, Zauner examines her experiences growing up in a bi-cultural household, grappling with her sense of belonging and navigating the complexities of grief. “Crying in H-Mart” is a deeply personal and moving memoir that delves into the universal themes of love, loss, and the power of embracing one’s heritage.

Iterations

Throughout the class there were pivotal design choices that led to the final poster. The red gradient background leading to overlaying pictures from Zauner’s actual childhood. The receipt was tossed to the side and then was eventually the main background. What brought all of these haphazardly placed objects together was the red basket becoming the main focal point in which the pictures and the receipt will fall in.

Concept

The early loss of her mother to cancer causes Zauner to learn the process of grief and coping as she explores her love for music and food. Trying to reconnect with her roots and seeing the struggles of growing up in a bi-cultural household, Michelle emphasizes the importance of food, particularly Korean food, as a source of comfort and connection. Now being the lead singer of the band Japanese Breakfast, this memoir discusses the challenges of straddling two cultures, the pressure to assimilate, and her journey to embrace and honor her roots.
